{"id":1284,"date":"2009-03-05T17:13:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-05T17:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elizaphanian.com\/?p=1284"},"modified":"2009-03-05T17:13:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-05T17:13:00","slug":"what-if-all-the-alternatives-fail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elizaphanian.com\/?p=1284","title":{"rendered":"What if all the alternatives fail?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First a good video which I originally watched at <a href=\"http:\/\/3minutetheologian.org.uk\/blog\/\">Justin&#8217;s place<\/a>, tho&#8217; it has done the rounds since then.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/3261363\">The Crisis of Credit Visualized<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/jonathanjarvis\">Jonathan Jarvis<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This post is really for Alex so that he can parade the size of his economic <a href=\"http:\/\/ancienthebrewpoetry.typepad.com\/ancient_hebrew_poetry\/2009\/03\/translating-assertive-language-in-1-kings-121011-.html\">little finger<\/a> (grin).<\/p>\n<p>Some propositions for discussion:<br \/>a) the great majority of banks are <span>radically <\/span>insolvent;<br \/>b) the extent of the insolvency dwarfs the assets of the governing class (including nations);<br \/>c) all attempts to keep insolvent banks afloat will fail &#8211; the only question is about how much of our money is destroyed trying to keep them afloat;<br \/>d) the way things are going, the authorities will _probably_ end up inflating their way out of the crisis (&#8216;quantitative easing&#8217;) &#8211; we&#8217;ll have a deflationary moment and then a sustained period of inflation, which will lead to the middle classes being wiped out; those that survive will be those that have access to either land (including being mortgage-free) or tradable skills (and most white-collar skills are not tradable);<br \/>e) the attempt to keep things going is immoral as it punishes the virtuous and rewards the vicious;<br \/>f) the <span>status quo ante<\/span> is gone, vanished, kaput. It is Obama&#8217;s failure to grapple with this &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/08\/opinion\/08rich.html?_r=1&#038;ref=opinion\">symbolised by his appointment of various corrupt and shady establishment figures<\/a> &#8211; that is the most ominous thing in the world scene at the moment. <\/p>\n<p>(Actually, that last is hyperbole. The implosion of Pakistan and the forthcoming implosion of Mexico are much more serious. I still think that <a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/financial-crisis-is-irrelevant.html\">the financial crisis is overemphasised<\/a>!)<br \/><span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First a good video which I originally watched at Justin&#8217;s place, tho&#8217; it has done the rounds since then.
