Do we agree? Why (\/not)?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I would say: yes, I have no doubt that beauty has an effect on character, partly from watching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b00p6tsd\">this programm<\/a>e recently (and I&#8217;ve purchased the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospectmagazine.co.uk\/2009\/03\/ohtellmethetruthaboutbeauty\/\">book<\/a>, but haven&#8217;t read it yet).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this is a complicated proposal. I happen to think that <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tate.org.uk\/?p=617\">the Weeping Woman of Picasso<\/a> is also tremendously beneficial to character &#8211; but I&#8217;m not sure I would count it as beautiful, even though I could (and have) spent ages contemplating it.<\/p>\n<p>I feel on stronger ground when thinking about architecture &#8211; I think the living environment affects how we live, both directly and indirectly.<\/p>\n<p>And of course music&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>What do people think?<\/p>\n<p>Scruton&#8217;s programme is available on Youtube, part 1 here:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A question asked by RevSimmy in the comments: &#8220;the equation of the aesthetic and the moral &#8211; i.e. beautiful art\/music has a moral effect.
