{"id":540,"date":"2010-12-12T17:19:00","date_gmt":"2010-12-12T17:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elizaphanian.com\/?p=540"},"modified":"2010-12-12T17:19:00","modified_gmt":"2010-12-12T17:19:00","slug":"this-ancient-holy-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elizaphanian.com\/?p=540","title":{"rendered":"This ancient holy island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking about an article I read in the local paper recently, which discussed the creation of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Strood\">&#8216;The Strood&#8217;<\/a> &#8211; which is the causeway that links Mersea Island with the island of Great Britain. I now discover that the article can be found on the Mersea Museum website <a href=\"http:\/\/merseamuseum.org.uk\/mmresdetails.php?tot=20&#038;col=MM&#038;pid=TXA01020&#038;typ=date&#038;hit=1\">here<\/a>, and it references an academic article that can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/cat.essex.ac.uk\/reports\/EAS-report-0023.pdf\">here <\/a>(pdf).<\/p>\n<p>Key points:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; the Strood was not built by the Romans, but by the Anglo-Saxons;<br \/>&#8211; it can be fairly firmly dated, to between 684 and 702 AD;<br \/>&#8211; the creation of the Strood would have been a major engineering project which  &#8220;suggests the presence on the island of a sufficiently important feature to merit such a structure and also a substantial financial expenditure on the part of somebody or some organisation able to afford it&#8221;;<br \/>&#8211; Essex at this time was an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_of_Essex\">independent Kingdom<\/a> (and so <a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/free-essex.html\">it should be again!<\/a>);<br \/>&#8211; the King of Essex at the relevant time was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A6bbi_of_Essex\">Saint Sebbi<\/a>;<br \/>&#8211; we know that the Anglo-Saxons founded a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minster_(church)\">Minster church<\/a>, of Benedictine character (linked with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_St._Ouen,_Rouen\">Rouen <\/a>if memory serves) on the Island, probably in the &#8216;early 8th century&#8217;;<\/p>\n<p>all leading to the slightly speculative conclusion &#8220;What can be more likely than that the saintly King Sebbi took a personal interest in the construction of the minster church at Mersea?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Minster church, of Benedictine character, founded by one who was &#8220;much addicted to religious actions, almsgiving, and frequent prayer&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I find it remarkable how a place can have a particular spirit &#8211; and, unknowing of all this, it&#8217;s uncanny how it ties in to what I&#8217;ve been pursuing in the benefice over the last couple of years, especially my sense that the Rule of St Benedict provides all that the parish needs.<\/p>\n<p>So. Society of Saint Sebbi anyone?
