That was then seasoned and enhanced whilst working in the East End, in a Muslim-majority area, particularly from taking sixth-form general studies lessons for the local youth. These are books that I have either read (linked through to a review where applicable) or that are on my bookshelf awaiting the right moment to be read. If I could only recommend one title for this area it would be the Habeck book, from whence comes <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kharijites\">my title<\/a>. My longest discussion of these issues can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/lubh-9-vain-deliverance.html\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Koran-Penguin-Classics\/dp\/0140449205\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281625988&#038;sr=1-1\">The Koran, Penguin Classics<\/a> (not an easy read)<br \/>I also have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Quran-Wordsworth-Classics-World-Literature\/dp\/1853267821\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1281625958&#038;sr=8-1\">a translation and commentary on the Koran by A. Yusuf Ali<\/a> brought back to me from Saudi Arabia by a friend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=LqR_mU0qpE4C&#038;pg=PP1&#038;lpg=PP1&#038;dq=muhammad+rodinson&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=Dq6UEp_BJN&#038;sig=Ko9pkWwRS6QVEP_9VCehDKt4kpA&#038;hl=en&#038;ei=2Q9kTP--LoTa4gbX_qnOCg&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;ct=result&#038;resnum=1&#038;ved=0CBoQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">Muhammad, by Maxine Rodinson<\/a> Standard, &#8216;vintage&#8217; biography of Muhammad.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2010\/07\/truth-about-muhammad-robert-spencer.html\">The Truth about Muhammad, Robert Spencer<\/a> &#8211; up to date and very critical biography.<\/p>\n<p><i>Historical<\/i><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Islam-Short-History-Universal\/dp\/1842125834\">Islam, a short history, Karen Armstrong<\/a> Basic, standard work.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Politically-Incorrect-Guide-Crusades-Guides\/dp\/0895260131\/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281626373&#038;sr=1-3\">The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades), Robert Spencer<\/a>. Robert Spencer giving his take (hostile).<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Islam-West-Oneworld-Classics-Religious\/dp\/1851681299\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281626416&#038;sr=1-1\">Islam and the West, Norman Daniel<\/a> Haven&#8217;t read this one yet, but it seems mainstream.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Decline-Eastern-Christianity-Under-Islam\/dp\/0838636888\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281626479&#038;sr=1-1\">The Decline of Eastern Christianity under Islam, Bat Ye&#8217;or<\/a> &#8211; another one still to be read, but highly regarded.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Legacy-Jihad-Islamic-Holy-Non-Muslims\/dp\/1591023076\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281628130&#038;sr=1-1\">The legacy of Jihad, ed. Andrew Bostom<\/a> &#8211; another still to be read, academic, thorough.<\/p>\n<p><i>Some philosophical ones:<\/i><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Al-Qaeda-What-Means-Modern\/dp\/0571238424\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281626729&#038;sr=1-1\">Al Qaeda and what it means to be Modern, John Gray<\/a> &#8211; short, readable and very stimulating contrarian view.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/West-Rest-Roger-Scruton\/dp\/0826470300\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281626808&#038;sr=1-1\">The West and the Rest, Roger Scruton<\/a> &#8211; argues that the West is distinctive and worth defending.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Crisis-Islam-Holy-Unholy-Terror\/dp\/0753817527\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281628341&#038;sr=1-1\">The Crisis of Islam, Bernard Lewis<\/a> &#8211; one of the foremost commentators of Islam from a Western perspective. I need to read more of Lewis&#8217; work.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Rage-Pride-Oriana-Fallaci\/dp\/084782599X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281627064&#038;sr=1-1\">The Rage and the Pride<\/a>, and, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Force-Reason-Oriana-Fallaci\/dp\/0847827534\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281627142&#038;sr=1-2\">The Force of Reason<\/a>, Oriana Fallaci. Fallaci is a bit bonkers, but she makes many telling points and deserves to be read more widely. I haven&#8217;t read the second one yet.<\/p>\n<p><i>On Jihad and our present war<\/i><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Knowing-Enemy-Jihadist-Ideology-Terror\/dp\/0300113064\/ref=sr_1_11?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281627394&#038;sr=1-11\">Knowing the Enemy, Mary Habeck<\/a> &#8211; I have just finished this one, and I would highly recommend it as the first one to read on this area. Measured and clear-eyed.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/celsius-77_15.html\">Celsius 7\/7, Michael Gove<\/a> &#8211; quite good for a politician.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Londonistan-UPDATED-NEW-FOREWORD-Creating\/dp\/1906142300\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281627713&#038;sr=1-1\">Londonistan, Melanie Phillips<\/a> &#8211; haven&#8217;t read beyond chapter one yet, but I can guess what to expect!<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Militant-Islam-Reaches-America-Pipes\/dp\/0393052044\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1281627860&#038;sr=1-1\">Militant Islam reaches America, Daniel Pipes<\/a> &#8211; one of the best books I&#8217;ve read; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielpipes.org\/\">Pipes&#8217; blog<\/a> is worth following.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/while-europe-slept-bruce-bawer.html\">While Europe Slept, Bruce Bawer<\/a> &#8211; stimulating and outlines what is at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Some terms that I think are worth understanding:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dhimmitude\">Dhimmitude<\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jizya\">Jizya<\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_War#Dar_al-Harb\">The House of War<\/a> (dar al-Harb) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_War#Dar_al-Islam\">House of Peace<\/a> (dar al-Islam)<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jahiliya\">Jahiliya<\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kharijites\">Khawarij<\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taqiyya\">Taqiyya<\/a><br \/>and of course<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jihad\">Jihad<\/a>, but see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielpipes.org\/990\/what-is-jihad\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll try and keep this post up to date.<br \/><span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I first started to become interested in Islam whilst at theological college, when I did a term&#8217;s course on it.
