This is where we get our energy from (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.decc.gov.uk\/en\/content\/cms\/statistics\/source\/total\/total.aspx\">here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Units are Million tonnes of oil equivalent<br \/>Coal:   37.9<br \/>Oil:   74.4<br \/>Gas:  93<br \/>Nuc:  11.9<br \/>Hydro:  1.1<br \/>Imports: 0.9<br \/>Renewables: 5.3<\/p>\n<p>Total: 224.4<\/p>\n<p>On an individual basis this works out at 3,814kg per head (<a href=\"http:\/\/datafinder.worldbank.org\/energy-use?cid=GPD_26\">here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The fossil fuel elements of that are going through the peaking process, so we can expect them first to become more expensive, then to become increasingly scarce (over what I would guesstimate as a twenty year period, see my post on UK gas supply <a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/why-im-worried-about-natural-gas.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Balance of payments questions<br \/>It has to be said that the UK is not best placed to withstand a constrained energy context. We import most of what we use and we are running out of ways to pay for it. This graph is from <a href=\"http:\/\/europe.theoildrum.com\/node\/3130\">this post<\/a>:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy90TY3d1uI\/AAAAAAAAETo\/tEWgjbsAiV8\/s1600-h\/UK_energy_balance.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy90TY3d1uI\/AAAAAAAAETo\/tEWgjbsAiV8\/s400\/UK_energy_balance.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>End use:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy9t8f_NbxI\/AAAAAAAAETY\/LxE5uxDc2iQ\/s1600-h\/uk+energy+end+consumption.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy9t8f_NbxI\/AAAAAAAAETY\/LxE5uxDc2iQ\/s400\/uk+energy+end+consumption.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ace.mmu.ac.uk\/Resources\/Fact_Sheets\/Key_Stage_4\/Energy\/02.html\">source<\/a><br \/>This is where household fuel goes:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy9tlQjYA4I\/AAAAAAAAETQ\/SNk6YG7HANA\/s1600-h\/UK_Home_energy_consumption_pie203.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy9tlQjYA4I\/AAAAAAAAETQ\/SNk6YG7HANA\/s400\/UK_Home_energy_consumption_pie203.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/>Some rapid tentative conclusions from the household level:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the most significant thing we can do to reduce our energy consumption and prepare for the shift is to insulate our homes;<\/li>\n<li>normal electrical use (eg TV, internet, fridge) is small beer compared to the two heating functions;<\/li>\n<li>therefore I&#8217;m still mildly optimistic that <a href=\"http:\/\/elizaphanian.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/fully-wired-future.html\">my geeky gadgets have a future<\/a>, especially if the government succeeds in building new nuclear<\/li>\n<p>this is also why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chpa.co.uk\/\">combined heat and power<\/a> is important<\/p>\n<li><\/ul>\n<p>This is where the transport fuel goes (<a href=\"http:\/\/fueltaxinquiry.treasury.gov.au\/content\/Submissions\/Government\/DOTARS_315.asp\">source<\/a>):<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy9vUjrpZJI\/AAAAAAAAETg\/MFZnUC_KhxM\/s1600-h\/uk+fuel+use.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_h8lco0yxl-k\/Sy9vUjrpZJI\/AAAAAAAAETg\/MFZnUC_KhxM\/s400\/uk+fuel+use.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/>Rapid tentative conclusions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>by far the greatest share goes to private transport;<\/li>\n<li>there is massive wastage in private transport; therefore<\/li>\n<li>there is a lot of room for comparatively painless squeezing (eg carsharing) as an initial reaction to stress;<\/li>\n<li>in the longer run private transport (electrical?) is likely to be the preserve of the wealthy<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m sure there will be a lot of efficiency gains in the wider transport sector but in part that will be through shifting to slower modes of transport (eg the canals)<\/li>\n<li>we&#8217;re not going to be flying in green beans from Kenya anymore; though we may well still import chocolate<\/li>\n<li>I think the truck sector will shrink the most<\/li>\n<p>there will be much less road transport on the other side of the bump &#8211; this will be a very good thing<\/p>\n<li><\/ul>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know much about the industrial use, so I&#8217;ll find out more about that.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, all I&#8217;m doing here is thinking about an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energybulletin.net\/node\/16859\">energy descent action plan<\/a>. Which is what <a href=\"http:\/\/transitiontowns.org\/\">the Transition Town movement is for<\/a>.
