This was very interesting, particularly given my recent thoughts about violence. Apparently Peckinpah viewed the Hoffmann character as bringing the violence down on himself, through his passivity at the beginning of the story, which makes psychological sense. And some spiritual sense as well – we are constrained by our own sin.
