So then, when you come to the Lord’s Supper to feed spiritually upon Christ, and when you thank the Lord for his great favour, for the redemption whereby you are delivered from despair, and for the pledge whereby you are assured of eternal salvation, when you join with your brethren in partaking of the bread and wine which are the tokens of the body of Christ, then in the true sense of the word you eat him sacramentally. You do inwardly that which you represent outwardly, your soul being strengthened by the faith which you attest in the tokens.
(found here, a post chiming with many of my preoccupations at the moment. And that’s Zwingli by the way, remarkable!)

World Trade Center

I thought this was a fine film: time will be very kind to it, in that as the immediate memories of the event start to fade, and the consciousness of the viewer is less saturated with TV news images, the craft of the film itself will stand out more clearly. Lots of excellent things in it.

On a related point, I couldn’t help but think in MoQ terms for some aspects – the way in which ‘social value’ binds groups together in such an essential way, to ensure that lives are not needlessly lost. Scorning social value has as much merit as scorning food.

Bruce Willis in ‘yes he can act’ shocker.
Quite enjoyable to watch him act against type. So so film otherwise. And what is it about moustaches that represent weakness?

Those of you who don’t read the Oil Drum (where I first discovered the story) or any of the climate watch blogs will likely be unaware that a major Hurricane, of Katrina-scale proportions, is about to hit the Persian gulf, with major consequences in all sorts of areas. The quickest way to grasp what’s coming up is at the Wunderblog here, the first Oil Drum post on it, with some extremely informative extra comments, is here.

In particular, if it causes the havoc at Bandar Abbas that it’s reasonable to expect, then the Iranian government is going to come under real strain, with wildly unpredicable consequences.

UPDATE: go here for a description of damage and aftermath. Strange how silent the western media is about it.

a little bit about the england team

GK Robinson (back ups in James and Foster)

CB Terry (c)
CB Carragher (back ups in Ferdinand, Ledley King, or as RCB Gary Neville)
LCB Bridge or A.Cole if fit

Deep midfield
DM Hargreaves or P Neville or Reo-Coker
DM Beckham or Carrick

Wide midfield
Left Joe Cole (back up Gareth Barry rather than Downing)
Right Aaron Lennon (back up SWP)

Attacking midfield
Gerrard (back up Lampard – tho’ I have to say that although Gerrard has sometimes been in inspirational form for Liverpool, I haven’t really seen him do it for England, where he gives away possession much too readily (Lampard much less so) and I think Lampard is better as a ‘straight’ midfielder. This formation, though, requires almost a front three to link together, and I’d like to see Gerrard and Rooney given a run at it. There’s also no point in having all three of Beckham, Gerrard and Lampard.)

Split striker
Rooney (Crouch vs Estonia)

Striker
Owen (back ups in Defoe and Johnson)

This is a formation that accommodates Beckham. I think Carrick could do much of his job in terms of distribution during a match, but it might not be worth structuring the team around him in the same way, as he hasn’t got the deadball gifts. In which case switch to standard 442 and put Gary Neville or AN Other into the right back slot.
